Antigonish—Or The Man Who Wasn’t There. I t began with stories about the ghost of a man haunting the stairs of a haunted house in the Canadian town of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Inspired by the stories, in 1899 American poet Hughes Mearns wrote a song about the ghost that he incorporated into his amateur play, The Psyco-Ed.In 1922, the song, now entitled Antigonish, was published as a poem.. William Hughes Mearns (1875-1965), better known as Hughes Mearns, was an American educator and poet.A graduate of Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania, Mearns was a professor at the Philadelphia School of Pedagogy from 1905 to 1920. Mearns is remembered now as the author of the poem “Antigonish” (or “The Little Man Who Wasn’t There”).
