Re: 15hp long versus short shaft. I would consider one of the following, 1: either get or change your engine to a short shaft. 2: rebuild the transom to fit a long shaft. You cant “shim” a long shaft to fit a short transom. As for some of the speed issue, you just plain have to much leg in the water that is causing excess drag.. If you are measuring for a lower unit replacement and your original lower unit is off of the engine, simply measure from the top of the waterpump to the top of your driveshaft. A shaft length that falls closest to 15 inches is short, closest to 20 inches is long, and so on. If your engine is mounted on a boat or a stand, locate the transom.
